It has been way too long since I updated this blog... but that should not be taken as a sign of stagnation.

My tentative decision to retire the Saturnin Sektor moniker still stands, especially given my current musical directions. There will still be plenty of electronic and electro-acoustic experimentation in my future music, perhaps even entire CDs of it, but at this point there is really no reason to keep it in a separate project whose obscure name most people have trouble pronouncing anyway. Besides, the different musical styles I have worked with over the last several years are converging and this is probably the best general purpose container for them. (If it gets too convoluted to keep up with the styles prevalent on any given CD, I'll adopt something similar to Paul Chain's 'container' system for identifying them).

As far as that goes, I'm less interested in producing physical CDs these days. I will probably still do very limited editions for friends and ardent fans, but the CD as a distribution medium is not worth the time, investment and storage space. (See my other blog, http://stonyrubbish.tumblr.com, for more info about my general turn toward greatly minimizing my physical possessions and the changes in attitude and philosophy that entails). I am quite happy with Bandcamp as a distribution method, and they embody many of the minimalist philosophies for design and features that I find appealing these days.

I am currently working on a new CD. So far, it has been far more metallic in nature than I thought I'd ever do again, but I certainly don't think of it as a 'metal' CD. In particular, there are noticeable influences from djent and other rhythmically complex music. This, combined with the more repetitive aspects of the first Misdreamt CD, should make for an intriguing work.

As with all my artistic endeavors, I don't want to place a timeframe on it. I'd much rather let it unfold as it may, and not feel under pressure to release something before I am completely happy with it.

Musical Consolidation

I have made the tentative decision to retire the Saturnin Sektor moniker and fold that project into Misdreamt as the catchall for my musical explorations.

In the past, I had always wanted to have a project name per style, to make it easier to promote and also because there was enough variation between projects that having too many disparate styles in one place would be too jarring (or at least unnecessarily difficult to weave in effectively).

Much of the electronic/noise material in Misdreamt was repurposed directly or indirectly from Saturnin Sektor material, and having extended sections (or even entire pieces) of electro-acoustic or ambient sound would fit right in with the aesthetic of Misdreamt.

So, for now Saturnin Sektor as a separate entity will be on hold, while I merge the ideas and experimentation from there into Misdreamt.

The First Show is Finally Out of the Way

Friday night's Misdreamt show went really well... the crowd was, how should I say, sparser than expected (possibly a casualty of the first bit of exceptionally comfortable evening weather in Atlanta in quite some time). But, the music seemed to go over extremely well and I'm sure this will be the foundation for further performances, and this proof of concept showed that the combination of film and live music (prerecorded electronics, live guitar) works very well.

First off, a huge thank you to Jim Combs (aka Sensitive Chaos), the organizer for City Skies and the night's first performer. The music of Sensitive Chaos was very reminiscent of Tangerine Dream in the Phaedra through Stratosphere era, but with enough of a modern sensibility in terms of tension and development to make it more than just a mere clone.

The next performer, the matter-of-factly named Duo For Theremin and Lap Steel, gave another of their excellent improvised sets. The interplay between the two gentlemen was a sight to behold (and hear), and the mental images of the people outside taking pictures of them through the windows will stick with me a while (makes me wish I had a picture of the picture takers).

I ran the videos off a MacBook Pro connected directly to the house video projector, and instead of running my guitar through a cabinet connected my Line6 head directly to the soundboard. While this helped a lot with mixing the sound heard over the PA, it left the stage sound for my guitar sounding fairly thin. I kept reminding myself that the house sound (which I had heard during soundcheck) was much better than what I was hearing on stage, and everything turned out fine. Even considering that, this was one of the best stage sounds I have had (and quite loud as well!). All in all, the performance and its reception were quite satisfying...

Upcoming projects

While most of my attention at the moment is on preparing for a Misdreamt show in September, I have still been putting some thought toward my projects for the near future.

For Misdreamt, I have already recorded one new song, and this will likely be the beginning of the next CD. I dislike making definite deadlines for creative endeavors whenever possible, and this is no exception. I'll say in general terms that I expect to make some major progress on this before the end of the year.

My long-suffering black/thrash project, Sender of Nightmares, has finally been released. While I love the music (and am proud of the level of development it reached over the [for some songs] 8+ years it took to refine!), I am glad to finally have it out of the way so I can move on musically. My interest in metal as listener and especially musician has waned a lot over the last several years, and this isn't really the direction I want to go in or be known for at this point. But, I believe in the music strongly enough still to want it released.

The next release for Saturnin Sektor will be based on a series of modified field recordings I made in a visit to an abandoned recycling plant in southwest Atlanta back in December. The tentative title is Remanifestations. Again, no release date is promised, but I expect to make major progress on this before end of the year. Faust DVD with my soundtrack

A version of the Faust (1926) DVD, with my new original soundtrack for the film, is now available. For now, this is only a burned DVD, intended to be distributed freely among friends and associates.

Casablanca, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Last night, I went on a double date to see the classic movie Casablanca (one of my favorite films), shown with a live performance of the soundtrack by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The film's music is wonderful, and hearing it performed live was a special treat. My only complaint was that sometimes the music drowned out the dialog, but this was never occurring for more than a few seconds. My theory is the quality of the original dialog recording, combined with the actors' accents and the loudspeakers, resulted in sound that was sometimes difficult to make out even without the music overshadowing it. (The performance was at the summer home of the ASO, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA).

But all in all, this was very enjoyable, and sounds like it may be becoming an annual tradition, which I think is a fantastic way to experience this awesome movie.

Sender of Nightmares

Sender of Nightmares is a black metal project I have been working on sporadically for the better part of 3 years. After numerous delays in recording, mixing, and mastering, this project will finally see the light of day in July!

The tentative release date is July 29, which has particular significance for the lyrical and thematic impetus behind the project. Expect more details very soon....

In terms of sound and influences, reference points include Slayer, Morbid Angel, Possessed, Bathory, and Incantation.

Two new tracks have been posted to the Bandcamp page for Saturnin Sektor.

The Waste Land

This piece was created for Robert Scott Thompson's advanced computer music class at Georgia State University in Spring 2009. The source recordings are from T.S. Eliot himself reading his classic work The Waste Land, edited and manipulated to have a more compact story line and showcasing various ways of processing sound to make use of space. The Bandcamp release of this track is the public debut for it.

Remanifestations

This piece appears on the 23 Seconds ov Time compilation (vol. 2). The source material is from field recordings made at an abandoned recycling plant in Atlanta, GA in late December 2010. This is a preview of a larger work (likely also to be called Remanifestations) that is in progress. For more info on one of the inspirations behind the conception of this work, read this essay on the idea of Remanifest from one of its primary exponents.

Audio scrapbooking

I have long been fascinated with electro-acoustic music, both as a listener and creator. Now, I am exploring this as part of documenting various aspects of our lives with my girlfriend (who is a bassoonist and metalsmith).

We have dubbed this open-ended project audio scrapbooking.

The creative process behind this begins with using various sound recording devices (at the moment, the Voice Memos app on my iPhone for off-the-cuff recordings, and an M-Audio MicroTrack II for places where we need higher quality and/or stereo recording), which we use to document the sounds that permeate our time together and apart. Some of the sounds are of the mundane (just setting up a recorder in the corner to capture whatever is going on), and sometimes we record specific events or sounds we want to capture.

The sounds are then processed and assembled into pieces we can listen to in order to relive the events, use as background sound, or listen actively in the case of pieces that are structured more like musical pieces.

Sounds are still being assembled (this will be an ongoing process, of course), and while some of the sounds may be used on pieces that are released commercially, much of this music will be distributed privately among close friends and family.

Performance of new soundtrack for Faust (1926)

I will be performing a new original soundtrack for the 1926 silent film Faust (directed by F.W. Murnau of Nosferatu fame). The performance will take place at the German Cultural Center at Colony Square in Atlanta on March 5th.

The music will consist of pre-recorded electronic music, with guitar performed live.

23 Seconds ov Time

This evening I completed a short but significant electro-acoustic piece called "Remanifestions", based on source material from my trip to an abandoned recycling plant on December. The piece, which is only 23 seconds long, was created for the 23 Seconds ov Time project. (I'm going to wait until the CD is out before releasing this snippet publicly; if you want to hear it, just let me know and I'll send it along).

This will be a hint of the much larger piece I am creating from the same source material (I'm pretty sure there is more than 23 seconds of worthwhile sound among the ~30 minutes of recordings I decided were worth keeping!)

This will probably be the backbone of the next Saturnin Sektor release.

The debut from Misdreamt is now available

The debut release from Misdreamt, The Motion Demon, is now available digitally.

I was playing around with Reverb Nation for a while as a way to spread my music, but find it to be way too cluttered both visually and in terms of features I don't really care about.

It looks like Bandcamp has hit the reset button on this sort of thing, and gotten back to basics. In fact, it reminds me quite a bit of what the original mp3.com was like before it sold out and then was shunned by a user base who felt betrayed.

So, for now Misdreamt will be available digitally. When I start getting shows lined up, I'll pursue some physical ones assuming I haven't gotten this picked up by a label for real distribution.

I'm also experimenting with "pay what you want" for some of the tracks, although set at a magically appropriate minimum of 44 cents per track. Others will not be available for individual download to encourage purchase of the entire album, itself set at $5.

This was another of those projects where I can't find the music I want to hear, so I have to create it instead. Hopefully others find it worthwhile too.

Significant progress on Misdreamt

My newest project Misdreamt (looped guitars, obscure percussion, and unsettling electro-acoustic ambience oozing from within) is coming closer to fruition.

The basic idea is to have the music prepared for release on its own, and to perform it live with abstract film in the background. At the moment about 35 minutes of music is ready, which is actually enough for a non-headlining set (finding suitable performance partners is one of the next bits of the puzzle). The film will be relatively simple, and repetitive, so it only remains to put some of my ideas onto virtual celluloid.

Now that I've done the hard part (music I'm willing to put my [pseudo-]name on ), this probably has to take a brief turn to the back seat while I finish up the Faust soundtrack (it is supposedly being performed at the beginning of next month, after all).

New horizons

The newest Saturnin Sektor CD called Unreal City, was recently released in a limited edition, hand-sigiled version being distributed mainly to friends and colleagues. I'll be exploring wider-range distribution options after the beginning of the new year.

The details for the Faust (1926) soundtrack performance are closer to being firmed up. I hope to announce something definite soon. Some samples of what has been done so far are still up at youtube.com/obversemusic in the meantime.

Finally, I have finally launched something from a new project which has been in the works for a while. In 2004 I released what is still my favorite CD among the 16 (!) I have done since 1999: the Eyes of Ligeia CD, What the Moon Brings. That CD, while ostensibly an atmospheric doom metal CD, is one of the more unique styles I created; in the 6 years since, neither I nor anyone else who has heard it has been able to identify anything else that sounds even close.

I decided in the last year to revisit that aesthetic somehow, after beginning to write some guitar parts in a similar vein. However, I absolutely did not want it to be a metal CD of any kind (having by and large moved beyond that in terms of what music I want to create and be known for). Luckily, the style of slow, arpeggiated and slightly dissonant guitar lines backed with simple percussion and ethereal soundscapes, can be transported in other directions as well.

My first inclination was to use the name What the Moon Brings to honor this lineage, but in addition to seeming a little "wordy" this also sounds little too "black metal".

After exploring other options, I finally settled on the name Misdreamt. It is ambiguous and obscure, not too suggestive (to me at least) of a metal or emo or goth band, and succinct (and spellable :-) enough to be memorable.

Shifting the Sonic Space - New Recording Soon Available

The next release for Saturnin Sektor will be available as a special limited edition version on October 17th. Unreal City is a collection of electro-acoustic music primarily based on field recordings made in places as diverse as Savannah, GA and Ireland. The fifth piece ("Graal") is mostly synthesized, although it does include some radically manipulated recordings of other sounds as well.

Current Projects

Currently, I have four different projects in various states of completion.

In no particular order:

1. Saturnin Sektor - Unreal City

The third Saturnin Sektor release has been a long time coming. The title track centerpiece needs a little bit of mastering work, but is mostly done. Unreal City is an imaginary landscape rendered into synesthesia, drawing from an unsettling walk through a city of imposing structures made real solely from the will of their inhabitants (and creators). Other vistas to be featured on this release are an audio record of the Grail quest, and a third piece which draws from the sound research of Berio.

2. Faust original soundtrack

This is by far my longest running project, and it's barely half over. Having gotten the premier of Act I out of the way, now I can get to work in earnest on the rest. Excerpts from the thus far completed parts can be found at youtube.com/obversemusic

3. motiondemon

The genesis of this musical persona is a reworking of the seminal 2004 work by Eyes of Ligeia called What the Moon Brings. My intention is to rework the two best songs from that release, and adding newer works in the same atmospheric guitar style. Originally this successor projector was to take the name What the Moon Brings in homage, but that was abandoned as too long and too suggestive of being yet another black metal project (motiondemon is not to be considered metal at all, hence the need to avoid misleading impressions; motiondemon has more ambiguity to it, IMO).

4. Sender of Nightmares -The Awakening of That Which Dreamt Us

This is another work which has been to long in the creation, with the drums having been recorded in May of 2008(!). This black metal project is completely recorded and is now being mixed. The prospects for release and promotion are rather uncertain, but this music must be unleashed given the time put into it so far and the metaphysical imperative of its original existence. With this, it can finally be put to rest.

Faust in Nevada

I didn't mean for the post title to be a reference to Nixon in China (the John Adams opera), but once I made the connection I couldn't get it out of my head.

In any event, a DVD of Act I of my soundtrack to the 1926 film will be shown at this year's Burning Man. A camp run by a long-time friend shows weird movies to the more adventurous (and likely altered) participants, and this surely counts as the most long-range public performance of my music. (Scratch that, Adam Scott Neal's sound diffusion recital featuring my older piece The Bone Season, at the Sonic Arts Research Center at Queen's University in Belfast, takes that cake; this one probably will win for size of audience, though.)

Edit 09/19/2010: This is probably the only time in my life I can say with a straight face that both Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz opened for me. I understand from my friend that the people who stuck around (rather than, I'm sure, argue about the veracity of what they just saw), quite enjoyed both film and music. Thanks Mike!

The Fifteen Albums meme

There is a meme floating around the interwebs (and the Facebooks) about listing 15 personally significant albums (and optionally the reason[s] for choosing them). There have been a number of albums which have completely changed my idea of what music could/should be, and here is a glimpse into how my tastes have changed over the years. These are not necessarily still my favorite albums, but they all still show up in various ways in either the music I create or listen to.

In order of original release:

1. Tangerine Dream - Phaedra

This was my first foray into electronic music, showing me how it could still be interesting compositionally while undeniably ambient and mysterious. So much of what I have done since (circa 1998 or so) would not have happened without exposure to this album.

2. Univers Zero - Heresie

When I was starting to become interested in the more esoteric corners of music fitting loosely under the banner of "progressive rock", I kept running across the name of this chamber music outfit from Belgium. This is still my absolute favorite release from UZ, and one of my favorite releases overall. Listening to "La Faulx" is a cathartic experience, from the brooding seething ambience from the low strings in the beginning, to the otherworldly Lovecraftian chants in the middle, to the explosive climax. This is essential for lovers of dark music, but still criminally obscure.

3. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time

This album both originally got me into heavy metal, as well as made me want to play guitar. Everything I've ever done in music derives in some fashion from this.

4. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

This changed my musical taste in strange ways primarily because I despised it at first. I didn't understand the necessity of the synthesizers, lyrically it was little obtuse but only because I didn't understand the references. Musically it more intricate than heavy at times, which wasn't what I was expecting. After gradually revisiting it, and finally grokking it, this is still my favorite Maiden release (and I got to see them perform three songs from it on the Somewhere Back in Time tour in 2008).

5. Metallica - And Justice For All

Bleak, mechanical, devastating. (And I love the production, since it fits the music so perfectly). One of the high points of my musical "career" was a reviewer pointing out an influence from this album popping up on one of my CDs in a way I hadn't even noticed.

6. Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth

After several years of pretty much listening to nothing but heavy metal, this Dead Can Dance CD widened my listening pallet quite a bit. This was in the rotation of "wake up" music in the stereo of the roommate of my girlfriend at the time (along with Peter Gabriel's Passion: Music from the Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack). While this was later supplanted as my favorite DCD CD by Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, it's still one I return to frequently.

7. My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans

I had always had a preference for slower metal, but this was the CD that made me realize what it could really be. In addition to having one of my favorite guitar tones of all time, this was the first truly successful melding of doom and death metal that I could get behind, and it is so epic and intricate I still don't understand how such British contemporaries as Paradise Lost and Anathema could be mentioned in the same breath.

8. Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens

Impossibly slow, heavy, melodic, and mournful, all at the same time. Thergothon single-handedly created 'funeral doom', and in 16 years of trying no one has come close to doing it as well.

9. The 3rd and the Mortal - Tears Laid in Earth

Everything about this is so perfectly melancholic, yet strangely uplifting due to the unfathomable beauty of Kari Rueslåtten's voice. There is a warmth and openness to this recording I've never heard anywhere else before or sense.

10. Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet

Funeral doom takes an ambient turn. Skepticism has continued to evolve in interesting ways since this, their first release, but nothing else they've done has the same impact. Thergothon may be the soundtrack to a funeral, but Skepticism is the soundtrack to dying itself.

11. Burzum - Filosofem

Finished and released after Varg Vikernes was already in jail for murder, this is easily the most hypnotic thing to come out of Norway's 90s black metal scene. Others may have come first, but only Varg showed what the music could truly become.

12. Lycia - Cold

The first Lycia release after Mike VanPortfleet moved from Arizona to Ohio was unlike anything they had done before or since. Looped guitars, whispered vocals, the ethereal voice of Tara Vanflower. This is a huge influence in my current musical meanderings.

13. Hamster Theatre - Carnival Detournement

Hamster Theatre is what a demented circus sounds like, filtered through a chamber ensemble masquerading as a rock band masquerading as a creepy music box in your grandmother's attic. The middle of "Jean-Marie" still makes me nearly weep at its beauty.

14. Robert Scott Thompson - Acousma

This 2-disc release from a future mentor essentially completed my transition to a primarily electro-acoustic composer. RST uses technology to find an amazing number sounds that don't exist until he divines them. Sometimes notes aren't nearly as important as the sounds that carry thenm.

15. Tom Waits - Blood Money

This was my introduction to Tom Waits, and still my personal favorite. Like a cynical carnival barker, Waits croons and growls through the musical backing to a David Lynch nightmare. Bonus points: "God's Away on Business" was used for the end credits on a PBS documentary about the Enron debacle.

Both Saturnin Sektor releases (the self-titled CD, plus The Solstice Variations are available for sale through Aucourant Records, one of the premier labels and distros for cutting-edge electronic, acousmatic, and electro-acoustic music.

Long awaited update

Updates (or lack thereof) to this minimal website are not suitable indicators for the totality of activity of Saturnin Sektor.

In the intervening months since the last update, a pair of two thematically-related CDs has edged closer to coming into Being.

The next release, officially unleashed on Samhain, but available slightly earlier to those dwell in the Fane of the Flame of Ba, will be a set of five pieces called The Solstice Variations.

"The Bone Season" will be part of a sound diffusion recital by Adam Scott Neal at the Sonic Arts Research Center in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The audience will be completed enveloped by the vast 40.6 surround sound system, and some may even live to tell about it.
